Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Microlaryngeal Surgery * Laryngeal Papilloma Excision

This surgical video highlights the treatment of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. The patient originally presented with persistent hoarseness. Examination in the office revealed an abnormal growth on the right vocal cord. A diagnosis of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (laryngeal papilloma) was made. This is a benign, wart-like growth which may obstruct the airway if it is not removed. In rare cases, cancer can be found amongst the papilloma. Microlaryngeal surgery is required to excise the papilloma. Under general anesthesia (the patient is completely asleep) a speculum (laryngoscope) is inserted into the throat to expose the vocal cords. A microscope is used to magnify the internal larynx (voice box). The white endotracheal tube (breathing tube carrying oxygen and anesthesia gas to the lungs) is beneath all of the instruments in this video. The papilloma is removed with a microdebrider (vacuum instrument with a rotating blade). The patient's voice returned to normal following the procedure. Frequent examinations in the office are required because laryngeal papillomatosis is likely to recur.
